Shehu Garba speaks on how NTA/AIT frustrated Buhari during the 2015 presidential campaign

Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Shehu Garba has spoken about the frustration president Buhari experienced from media organizations, NTA and AIT during his presidential election campaign earlier this year. Speaking at The Red Media Summit in Lagos, today Oct. 15th, Garba said
“Americans say that elections are won on the dollar. It’s very improbable that anybody can win an election without money. We didn’t have advertising money on our campaign. Even when we had little money to spend on advertising, the Nigerian Television Authority was not making available to us slots, neither was AIT. I remember on a particular night I called NTA, they had 16 slots of one minute adverts and I said I wanted to buy one minute for the Buhari campaign, they said all 16 had been sold.
Some other instances that exposed the partisan nature of the NTA. Money was returned to us, from AIT money was returned to us. They simply won’t advertise for us.”he said
During his speech, Shehu Garba narrated how the prompt spread of news of social media helped him go through a military seige at his home during the campaign period
“The day there was a security siege at my home, I woke up to see that my house had been surrounded by armed policemen in the course of the campaign. In fact it was the cocking of their guns that rose me and my family members from our sleep. Only to discover that tens of policemen, police vehicles, and some other unidentified vehicles darkened our windows around my home. The first thing I did was to say ‘Who will help me out of this situation?’ I needed to expose what was going on, and the‎ first man I reached was Adebola Williams of Statecraft. Adebola began to announce on Facebook and Twitter from that moment until the security elements realized that the whole world was looking at what they were doing, because I remained indoors throughout the siege. Of course it was much later that we came to know why they had come. Even the APC Presidential Campaign was penetrated by fifth columnists, and I will make this confession, because a day before that siege we had had a meeting with the security committee at which we agreed that we were going to run a story announcing that the National Security Adviser at that time, Mr. Sambo Dasuki, was staging a second coup d’etat against Muhammadu Buhari. The former National Security Adviser was involved in a coup that threw out Muhammadu Buhari as military president in 1984. This time around, all the things that followed, the postponement of the election on account of this and that and a lot of the thinking of the campaign was that this was yet another coup being hatched by the National Security Adviser and we eventually discovered that this siege on our homes was to pre-empt the story.‎” he said

Horrifying Moment A Plane Falls Apart During Takeoff

THIS is the horrifying moment a plane's engine starts to fall apart on takeoff – as seen by terrified passengers.
Footage shot through the aircraft's window shows the jet's turbine as it starts to wobble alarmingly in the wind.
Moments later its outer casing starts to peel away, leaving the innards exposed just as the plane leaves the ground.
The stomach-churning scene unfolded as Sky Airlines flight 112 left Santiago, Chile, for Copiapó on Wednesday.
After becoming aware of the problem, the plane had to return to the runway at Santiago airport.
Posting on its Twitter account, the airline said the flight suffered "partial detachment of one piece covering an engine".
It went on to say the passengers were never at risk and that all 137 of them made their journey on another flight.
The incident comes just days after an easyJet flight made an emergency landing when its pilot blacked out, leaving his co-pilot in charge.
The flight from Gatwick to Crete stopped in Venice, Italy, last Friday and passengers had to board a replacement to continue their journey.

Sky Airlines is the second biggest in Chile and flies to Argentina, Brazil, Peru and Bolivia.

Suspected armed robbers  this morning raided a micro finance bank located in the Sam Mbakwe Cargo Airport, as well as the offices of Arik and Air Peace Airlines in Imo State.

Over N20m and other valuables were said to have been carted away in the robbery that lasted just a few minutes.

According to an eye witness, the armed robbers who besieged the airport in two unmarked vehicles, overpowered the security men attached to the bank.

The source who stated that the noise of banging of doors and windows by the robbers coupled with their gunshots scared people away from the scene.

An employee of Arik, who didn’t want to be named, said their offices were broken into, company and personal valuables of the workers were stolen.

Meanwhile when contacted, the Imo State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Andrew Enwerem, who confirmed the incident, however, said it was a case of burglary.

According to him, “We got the report that some hoodlums broke into a Micro Finance Bank at the airport, but we did not get any report that they removed cash and no one was killed or wounded.

Four Women Found Dead In A Room In Anambra

Chinwe Obi, a staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Awka, had a premonition of her death, she didn’t show it; rather, she was busy making preparations to give her dear departed husband a befitting burial.

The husband, a business man based in Cotonou reportedly died in a in unclear circumstance a week before Chinwe’s death. He had come to visit his wife at their Olisa Onyeka Street, Awka apartment when he fell ill and died. His corpse is still at the morgue where Chinwe deposited it before she met with her death.

According to sources, Chinwe had invited three other women of her church, the Omega Power Ministry (OPM) for an all night special prayers. The first inkling that something could be amiss was when all calls put across to Chinwe’s telephone line went unanswered. Thereafter, her neighbours started perceiving a foul smell coming out from her apartment.

In a chat with Daily Times, Mrs. Ify Onyebumo, the landlady of the apartment where Chinwe lived for close to a year, disclosed that she was contacted on phone by one of her tenants saying they have been looking for the deceased since Sunday.

Onyebumuo noted that the tenant informed her that a foul smell and water was coming out from Chinwe’s room, adding that she had not picked her calls since Sunday.

A similar call was also placed to the caretaker of the house, Mr. Machie Ignatius to intimate him of the development going on at the house.

This prompted the landlady and the caretaker of the house to invite a detachment of policemen led by the Anambra State Police Commissioner of Police, Mr. Hassan Karma to the building.

On arrival, Karma took an inspection of the compound along with his officers and men of the command and ultimately forced one of the burglary proofs to a window open where the already decomposing bodies of the four women was discovered, clutching their Bibles.

An ambulance was called in and morticians evacuating the four corpses out of the building to the mortuary.

Simon Nwoye, one of the residents in the area who saw the corpses posited that the deceased could be victims of carbon monoxide inhalation.

”You could see from their faces and what I saw around the flat, they may have been killed by the smoke from the generator,” he said.

Mrs. Uloaku Madubugha, another neighbour who lives few buildings away from the scene noted that there is no suspicion of foul play in the death of the victims.

“If someone had broken into the flat, we would have seen evidence of breaking and entry, either through the window or through the door, but there was nothing like that,” she said.

The commissioner of Police in a chat with Daily Times also ruled out foul play in the death of the deceased, but said that investigations will be carried out to ascertain the cause of their death.

In his words, “It’s quite unfortunate; it is something nobody should pray for. There was no sign of violence on their bodies. We also saw a power generating set but there was no fuel in the tank; we also saw a pot of soup there, so we are suspecting carbon monoxide or food poisoning.

“The soup and their bodies would be examined; it is left for an autopsy to be carried out on them in order to find out what killed them,” he said.

One of the last people to see the deceased alive is a motor mechanic, who was contracted by the deceased to help get fuel for her generator; he shared with Daily Times events that preceded the discovery of the women’s corpses.

Ebola Vaccine Works, Offering 100% Protection In African Trial

A highly unusual clinical trial in Guinea has shown for the first time that an Ebola vaccine protects people from the deadly virus. The study, published online today by The Lancet, shows that the injection offered contacts of Ebola cases 100% protection starting 10 days after they received a single shot of the vaccine, which is produced by Merck. Scientists say the vaccine could help to finally bring an end to the epidemic in West Africa, now more than 18 months old.
"This will go down in history as one of those hallmark public health efforts," says Michael Osterholm, the director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy in Twin Cities, Minnesota, who wasn't involved in the study. "We will teach about this in public health schools."
"It's a wonderful result and a fantastic illustration of how vaccines can be developed very quickly and can be used in an outbreak situation to control the disease," says Adrian Hill, a vaccine researcher at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom, also not involved in the work.

The vaccine, first developed by researchers at the Public Health Agency of Canada, consists of the Vesicular Stomatitis Virus (VSV), which causes disease in livestock but not people, with the Ebola surface protein stitched into it. It is one of two vaccines currently being tested in the Ebola-stricken countries; the other one is produced by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK). The study of the Merck vaccine was led by Ana Maria Henao-Restrepo of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva, together with colleagues at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health in Oslo, the Guinean Ministry of Health, and others.
The decision to start the trial was taken in October, but it didn't get off the ground until March. By then, Ebola cases had already begun to plummet, and they were scattered across a large area in Guinea. To show efficacy in a standard randomized controlled trial, the researchers would have had to enroll far more people than was feasible.
Instead, they opted for a design called ring vaccination, in which only contacts of new Ebola patients, as well as the contacts' contacts, were vaccinated. The rings, or clusters, were randomized; in 48 of them, vaccination occurred as soon as possible after the detection of the Ebola case in their community. In the 42 other clusters, the vaccination teams came to give the shots three weeks later. The researchers then counted the number of new Ebola cases in each ring; because they weren't sure how long it takes for the vaccine's protection to kick in, they only included cases that occurred at least 10 days after vaccination in their primary analysis of the data. There were zero such cases among the 2014 people who were vaccinated right away, and 16 among the 2380 who got the shot 3 weeks later. That translates to 100% vaccine efficacy, at least in this study, the researchers write.
The idea of a ring vaccination design, never before used in a formal vaccine study, "was absolutely very creative," says Osterholm, and it allowed the team to follow the epidemic wherever it went. "Had this been a standard, straightforward randomized controlled trial, we would never had this answer.”
"It surprised me how quickly you can intervene with a vaccination and have an effect," says Jeremy Farrar, the head of the Wellcome Trust research charity, which co-funded the study. "It’s possible to do that sort of complex work in very, very complex environments—ethically, socially, culturally and scientifically. You can do it. That is a revelation for many people."

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and wife Priscilla announces they are expecting a baby girl.

The following are what the founder of Facebook Mark Zuckerberg posted on his Facebook page

"Priscilla and I have some exciting news: we're expecting a baby girl!

This will be a new chapter in our lives. We've already been so fortunate for the opportunity to touch people's lives around the world -- Cilla as a doctor and educator, and me through this community and philanthropy. Now we'll focus on making the world a better place for our child and the next generation.

We want to share one experience to start. We've been trying to have a child for a couple of years and have had three miscarriages along the way.

You feel so hopeful when you learn you're going to have a child. You start imagining who they'll become and dreaming of hopes for their future. You start making plans, and then they're gone. It's a lonely experience. Most people don't discuss miscarriages because you worry your problems will distance you or reflect upon you -- as if you're defective or did something to cause this. So you struggle on your own.

In today's open and connected world, discussing these issues doesn't distance us; it brings us together. It creates understanding and tolerance, and it gives us hope.

When we started talking to our friends, we realized how frequently this happened -- that many people we knew had similar issues and that nearly all had healthy children after all.

We hope that sharing our experience will give more people the same hope we felt and will help more people feel comfortable sharing their stories as well.

Our good news is that our pregnancy is now far enough along that the risk of loss is very low and we are very hopeful.

Cilla and our child are both healthy, I'm extremely excited to meet her and our dog Beast has no idea what's coming. In our ultrasound, she even gave me a thumbs up "like" with her hand, so I'm already convinced she takes after me.

We're looking forward to welcoming her into the world and sharing more soon when she's ready to come out and meet everyone!

PUNCH Metro learnt that the woman, identified simply as Adenike, and her family were attacked on Tuesday at about 2am on Eyin Iga Street.
Our correspondent gathered that the robbers, who were armed with knives and cutlasses, reportedly gained entrance into the house after damaging the gates.
It was learnt that when the robbers got to Adenike’s apartment, there was a struggle during which one of the robbers, identified as Quadri Iginla, cut her with a knife.
Adenike was said to have wrenched the knife from Iginla, and stabbed him in the stomach.
The robbery suspect reportedly lost balance and fell off from the two-storey building.

Neighbours, who learnt of the robbery, were said to have alerted the police from the Adeniji Adele Division.
The other suspected robbers reportedly escaped after the police got to the area.
The policemen were said to have rushed Iginla, who was unconscious, to the Lagos Island General Hospital, while Adenike was also taken by her family to a private hospital.
When our correspondent got to the area on Thursday, it was learnt that Iginla died in the hospital.
Speaking with PUNCH Metro, Adenike’s husband, who declined to give his name, said the robbers injured his wife in the hand with a knife, adding that there was a struggle during which Iginla was pushed off the building.
He said, “We cannot confirm the number of the robbers. They entered my apartment at about 2am. One of them injured my wife in the hand and there was a struggle. As this went on, other people called the police and a patrol van was sent to our street.
“The robbers quickly fled from the house. One of them, who had sustained a knife injury, fell off the staircases. The policemen took him to a hospital for treatment.”
A police source told our correspondent that Iginla was not attended to at the general hospital for lack of a vacant bed. He added that the robbery suspect died at a health center on the Adeniji Adele Road.
He said, “The police patrol team responded to a distress call on the street at about 2.30am. A male robbery suspect, Iginla, was found injured. “She was also injured in the hand. During the struggle, others escaped, but the robber fell off the building. The police took the suspect and the victim to the hospital.”
A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told our correspondent that Iginla’s girlfriend showed up at the police station, and wanted to know where he was being treated.
He said, “No one in the area knew the identity of the injured robber. His girlfriend showed up at the station, and was asking the police to let her stay with him, but they did not allow her.”
Our correspondent gathered that the knife had been recovered, while the case had been transferred to the State Department of Criminal Investigation.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Patricia Amadin, confirmed the incident. She added that the command was on the trail of other members of the gang.
She said, “The team of policemen was led by the Divisional Police Officer, and the robbery suspect was found unconscious, having fallen from the two-storey building.
“He was rushed to a hospital where he later died. The corpse has been deposited in a morgue for autopsy. Investigation continues as the command is on the trail of the fleeing gang members.”

PDP broke, set to sack about half of their work force.

The loss of the Peoples Democratic Party  in the last general elections few months ago seem to have affected the party financially as it is set to reduce its work force by 50%.

Punch reports that the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party has concluded plans to sack half of its workforce.

Towards this end, National Secretary of the party, Prof. Wale Oladipo, has communicated the decision of the NWC to all its directors.

Oladipo made the party’s decision known via a memo yesterday, which was directed to “all directors and PS/DD/HOD/SAs/PAs and Establishment Staff” of the party in Abuja.

It was titled “Re-organisation and restructuring of staff at the national secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party.”

Oladipo said the report “on the reorganisation and restructuring of staff at the national secretariat” and decisions was approved at the latest NWC meeting.

He also said the salaries and allowances of those to be left behind would also be cut by as much as 50 per cent. The decisions of the NWC includes, “reduction of the allowance of all NWC members by 50 per cent and reduction in the number of security personnel attached to the national officers by 50 per cent.”

Other include “reduction of the salaries and allowances of all staff (Establishment and Staff of NWC members) by 50 per cent, effective August, 2015.

“Abolition of Research Directorate and transfer of its functions to the Peoples Democratic Institute.”

He added that “Establishment staff who would remain are required to obtain individual letter of revalidation from their state chapters within one month of this circular as to their suitability for service at the national secretariat.”

A source within the party said the “party lacks transparency and proper accountability.” Investigations also revealed thatthe decision was actually taken about a month ago by its NWC.

A senior staff of the party, who spoke on the issue but didn’t want to be named said, “We are in trouble in this party. The NWC members are lords unto themselves.

“There is no one to control them and the finances of the party. They have paid themselves several allowances. Even during the last Sallah break, they took money.

“But because we demanded for our furniture allowance, see the memo they gave us. The idea behind this is to sack us and then they will bring in their cronies.”
